Local photographer gives portrait sittings in exchange for donations to help drought-stricken families in the Horn of Africa

Friday,Aug. 5 — Local photographer Michael McPeak is giving back to those in thecommunity who also give back. OnSaturday, he’ll offer portrait sittings to people that donate toSave the Children for the Horn of Africa Drought Relief.

McPeak is calling the project “Faces ofCaring.” The event begins at 1 p.m. with a reception in the North Foyer Galleryof East Lansing Public Library.

“I became aware of what was going on in the Horn of Africa, and when Italked to friends who are experts in charitable organizations they stronglyrecommended Save the Children — and I’m a parent,” McPeak said.

This is the second time he has used portraitsittings to raise money. The first time, he raised $1,300 for the Red Cross Tsunamirelief effort in Japan.

McPeaksaid donations of $100 are encouraged but he understands if less is given.

There isno maximum number of people who will be allowed portrait sittings fordonations, McPeak said.

McPeak workslocally with three galleries: Saper Galleries, Absolute Gallery and The LansingArt Gallery. He features his images on the walls of the Old Town Medical ArtsBuilding in a display called The McPeak Healing Gallery, and he currently has photography on display atthe East Lansing Public Library.
