Job Fair

MSU students connect with potential employers

Thursday, Sept. 8 — New college graduates are not immune to the unemployment crisis that has Lansing clocking in at a 9.2 percent unemployment rate, so Michigan State University gives current students a chance to get ahead by offering a variety of career fairs.

The first career fair of the semester, the Earn, Learn and Intern Fair, took place Wednesday at MSU’s Spartan Stadium.

The event gave students the opportunity to meet with local recruiters and apply for internships or jobs, said Theda Rudd, interim executive director of career services at MSU.

“This year is open and free to local companies in the area,” Rudd said. “It’s an opportunity for students to get part-time jobs as they’re working through school.”

Prima Civitas, an East Lansing non-profit company that works to link college students with private and public companies, sponsored the fair, which was held in the Spartan Club on the fourth floor of the stadium.

Despite the downward spiral of hiring trends in Lansing, over 100 companies attended the Earn, Learn, and Intern event in order to meet with MSU students.

“The attraction (for businesses) is that MSU students are hard-working people, a lot of whom come from hard-working families,” Rudd said. “Many come from Midwest values and don’t take things for granted.”

Nick Magee, a supply chain management junior at MSU, said he’s not attending any career fairs this semester, but he’s planning on attending one in January.

“I’ve been going to the career fairs every year,” Magee said. “It gives you an opportunity to get face time with the recruiters and allows them to actually get to know you, even if it’s just briefly.”

Magee knows firsthand the benefits of attending career fairs. He accepted an out-of-state internship at Kimberly-Clark Corp. in Neenah, Wis., last year after interviewing with the company at MSU. The company owns brands such as Kleenex, Huggies and Cottonelle. Magee completed the semester-long internship in May.

Four other job fairs will be available for students to attend later this month including the Accounting & Information Systems Career Exchange on Wednesday and the Finance Association Career Fair on Sept. 29. Other events are scheduled to take place in October and November. Information for each upcoming event can be found online at careernetwork.msu.edu.
