Tesco Vee brings Meat to The Loft
The Meatmen make its only Lansing appearance in 2011 Sunday atThe Loft, when the band plays an early, all ages show. Fronted byLansing punk legend Tesco Vee, The Meatmen has been playing obnoxiousand offensive music since it formed in Lansing in 1979. With songs like“Crippled Children Suck,” the band has been known to ruffle feathersthanks to Vee’s tongue-in-cheek lyrics. Warming up the stage is theDetroit-based “surf-core” band The Amino Acids. Opening the show is thepunk sounds of Against the Grain, also from Detroit. Advance saletickets are available at The Golden Harvest, F.B.C, and The Loft. Theevent was booked by Divide & Conquer Booking, a company operated byDane Vee (Tesco’s son).

Dulcimer Fest celebrates Appalachian folk instrument
The Ten Pound Fiddle continually hosts unique folk shows – thisweek is no exception. The second annual Dulcimer Festival will showcaseperformers who specialize in the stringed folk instrument. The day-longhappening will feature dulcimer (hammered and lap dulcimer) songwritingand technique workshops hosted by area musicians Sally Rogers, KendraWard, Bob Bence, Doug Berch, and Wanda Degen. It will also feature twomini-concerts by Degen and Berch. Workshops from 10:30 a.m. to 3:15p.m., mini concerts start at 3:30 p.m., and a dulcimer jam will run 2p.m. to 5:30 p.m. For musicians of all levels looking for a newinstrument, this may be worth checking out. Folk favorite Sally Rogers close Dulcimer Fest
Fiddle veteran and former East Lansing resident SallyRogers, preceded by the duo of Kendra Ward and Bob Bence, conclude theSecond Annual East Lansing Dulcimer Festival with a Saturday Eveningconcert. Rogers, a Michigan native now living in Connecticut, hasmanaged to find success in not only the folk world but also thechildren’s music genre. Known for her crystal-clear alto and skilledsongwriting Rogers has managed to keep busy for decades.

New Zealand Outsiders at Mac’s Bar
Outsiders released its debut EP at its first show in July2008. In the three years since the Wellington, New Zealand-based bandhas toured across the United States, Europe, The United Kingdom,Australia and New Zealand constantly. Monday the band plays Mac’s Bar.Since starting its rigorous touring schedule, The Outsiders have openedfor the likes of NOFX, Megadeath, Alkaline Trio, Lagwagon, and TheFlatliners, to name a few. The band’s latest album “Shallow Graves” isa focused and progressive approach to melodic punk rock, with soundssimilar to bands like Jawbreaker, The Replacements and early AgainstMe! Opening the show at Mac’s is local rockers Nocturnal Aviators InAction.

Blues Harmonica blast with Tomas Esparza
LeRoy’s Classic Bar & Grill will host a special showfeaturing Grand Rapids harmonica ace Tomas Esparza, along with Lansingguitarist Harry Oman. Esparza plays a powerfully authentic harp, in thestyle of the Chicago greats, with a touch of Latin flavor. Also takingpart in this jam session is Jim Alfredson (organ), and Randy Marsh ondrums. Green Door hosts Hoopties’ CD release party
The Hoopties is an American roots band that plays some originalmaterial while also paying homage to the member’s favorite musicalheroes with a few choice covers. The Lansing-based group dabbles inblues, country, zydeco, reggae, even some old soul. The band, which wonthe 2011 Capital Area Blues Brawl, will release its debut CD “It Ain’tNever Been Easy” Thursday at The Green Door. The band features TwylaBirdsong (lead vocals), Jason Strotheide (bass, vocals), Aaron Holland(guitar, vocals), James “Mocha” Waller (saxophone, harmonica) and EricPayne (drums, vocals). Opening the show is Blastica.
