Thursday, Oct. 13 – On Sunday, dozens of Lansing locals andrevved-up Michigan State University students kick-start MSU’s homecoming weekwith the Spartan Sprint 5k run and walk race.

But the story doesn’t end there. Ele’sPlace, a Lansing-based healing center for grieving children, will receive theproceeds from the event, orchestrated by the MSU Residence Halls Association.

Many of the children involved with Ele’sPlace have either recently experienced the death of a close family member orare still in the healing process following the diagnoses of a life-threateningillness of a sibling or parent. “Money from the race will help us continue providing programs for thechildren who need them the most,” said Ele’s Place event coordinator TraceyRussman. “We provide the childrenwith peer groups where they can come weekly and meet other kids that are goingthrough the same situations.”

This week marks the first time the RHA hasselected Ele’s Place as a philanthropy project in conjunction with its annual5k homecoming race, but it won’t be the only time they’ve held a fundraiser forthe center. “There’s lots ofevents throughout the year that the RHA uses to benefit Ele’s Place,” Russman said. Last year, the Spartan Sprint proceedswere given to Habitat For Humanity.

As of now the RHA has raised over $2,000for the race, and is expecting to collect even more on Sunday. “We have over 123 people alreadyregistered to attend this year, which is a great improvement from last year’s25 attendees,” said Divya Badey, RHA’s director of health and safety.

Those who wish to compete in the eventcan register with the RHA by paying $17 until the Saturday registrationdeadline; after that, the entry fee costs $25. There will also be a free one-mile running course availablefor children who would like to compete.

The race beginsat 10 a.m. behind the rock on Farm Lane and follows a scenic course throughMSU’s campus. Race participants can either walk or run. The first three malesand females to finish receive a medal, and all participants receive a raceT-shirt and water bottle.
