Friday, Nov. 11 —  When it comes to the Jazz Alliance of Mid-Michigan’sSaturday mixer and membership drive, don’t believe everything you read.

Despite what the posters for the event may say, studentswill not be charged admission.

“So much of the great jazz around town comes from studentsfrom Lansing Community College and Michigan State University’s jazz studiesprograms,” said Candice Wilmore, a founding member of JAMM. Wilmore said sheand the other founding members of JAMM decided students are strapped for cashthese days and need a break.

This is JAMM’s second annual membership drive, and Wilmoresaid she hopes to add at least 50 new members. Scheduled performers includedrummer Jeff Shoup, bassist Sam Copperman and pianist Alex Krausman.Participants are welcome to bring instruments and join in a jam session.

It could be an ear-opening experience, Wilmore said: “Manypeople come to shows and say ‘I didn’t think I liked jazz because it seems likea lot of noise I don’t understand,’ and then leave saying, ‘I didn’t know this was jazz.’”
