Monday, Nov. 28 — The Lansing City Council delayed action onthree potential ballot proposals tonight because three members might not havehad a chance to weigh in on them, the Council president said.

Council was scheduled to discuss the three proposals, whichcould end up on Feb. 28 ballots, during its Committee of the Whole meetingtonight. But 3rd Ward Councilwoman A’Lynne Robinson canceled the committeemeeting, which was to take place after the Council’s full meeting.

“I anticipated that we may not have a quorum and so ratherthan drag that along and go through all the antics and not be able to doanything with the information collected, I elected not to have the meeting andhold everybody here,” Robinson said.

Fourth Ward Councilwoman Jessica Yorko was absent from theCouncil meeting, and Robinson said At-Large Councilman Derrick Quinney wasunable to make the committee meeting. Robinson added that she was unclearwhether 1st Ward Councilman Eric Hewitt could stay for the committeeafterwards.

The ballot proposals before Council would reduce the numberof times the eight-member body meets in a year; allow for the sale of theWaverly Golf Course and adjacent Michigan Avenue Park; and allow for the saleof a building and parking lot in the 1st Ward that was formerly used by theParks and Recreation Department. City Council must approve the proposals byDec. 20 in order for them to appear on the presidential primary ballots on Feb.28, City Clerk Chris Swope said.

The committee will take up the issues after next week’sCouncil meeting.

During its regular meeting, the Council unanimously approvedsix resolutions, including a Section 108 loan from the U.S. Department ofHousing and Urban Development in order to move forward with the renovation ofthe Knapp’s building downtown. Council also approved two special use permitsfor two churches in the city limits as well as scheduled public hearings for twotax incentive packages for ELMET North America for its headquarters atInterstate 96 and U.S. 127. The final resolution appoints Barry Wood to theBuilding Board of Appeals for a term to expire June 30, 2013.
