Soul Asylum and Morris Day head to Common Ground

Eight new acts added to the lineup of the July festival

Thursday, May 17 — In 1982, Morris Day famously asked, “What Time Is It?” In 2012, he has his answer: Common Ground time.

The 1980s R&B idol — whose hits such as “777-9311,” “The Bird” and “Jungle Love” still get plenty of play on Retro Night — brings his band, The Time, to Common Ground Music Festival July 10.

Other recent additions to the lineup include former “American Idol” contestant Casey James and Sister Hazel (July 11), The Wallflowers, Soul Asylum, Walk Off the Earth and Lights (July 13) and Saving Abel (July 14).

Since his “Idol” days, James has been establishing himself with country audiences; his self-titled debut album was released in March. Florida-based rockers Sister Hazel broke into the Top 20 in 1997 with “All For You” from their platinum-selling “ … Somewhere More Familiar” LP.

The Wallflowers, fronted by Jakob Dylan, sold more than four million copies of their “Bringing Down the Horse” CD, which spawned the successful singles “6th Avenue Heartache,” “One Headlight” (which won Grammys for best rock song and best rock performance by a duo or group) and “The Difference.” After almost a decade of being a cult band, Soul Asylum broke into the big time in 1992 with the “Grave Dancers Union” LP and its 1995 follow-up, “Let Your Dim Light Shine.” The band’s hit “Runaway Train” was nominated for a Grammy as best rock song in 1994.

Canadian singer Lights, whose Capital City Film Festival concert was a hot ticket earlier this year, returns for a July 13 show to promote her album, “Siberia,” which was released last year. Walk Off the Earth got a record deal with Columbia after the band’s acoustic cover of “Somebody That I Used to Know” went viral on YouTube a few months ago. Saving Abel joins the previously announced Three Days Grace and Like a Storm to make July 14 a night of heavy rock.

The festival is offering a limited selection of $15 tickets for The Wallflowers, Soul Asylum, Lights & Walk Off The Earth (Friday, July 13) during a 13-hour promotion on Friday, May 18. Orders are limited to eight tickets per person. The regular price for this package is $25.
