Friday, May 18 — A violinist from Battle Creek took the top honor in the Lansing Symphony Orchestra’s annual Youth Competition, in which young musicians compete for the chance to solo with the LSO.
First place went to 13-year-old Zachary Brandon, who performed a selection from the first movement of Mendelssohn’s “Concerto in E minor.” The competition, which took place May 5 and is judged by LSO musicians, required that students perform a selection from a composition available for orchestra and solo instrument.

Second Place: Natalie Lee, violin; Okemos High School; daughter of Mei-Hui Tai and Fengjong Lee (Teacher: Dmitri Berlinksy, Okemos)
Third Place: Lydia Roth, flute; home-schooled; daughter of Paul and Louise Roth (Teacher: Christopher Kantner, Hudsonville)
Honorable Mention: Jody Chou, piano; Okemos High School; daughter of Huei-huang Hsu and Hung-kun Chou (Teacher: Derek Polischuk, Okemos)
Honorable Mention: Curtis Kuo, cello; Okemos High School; son of Min-Hao Kuo and Ginger Yang (Teacher: Jean Lee, East Lansing)
