JazzFest for kids

Instrument-making workshop at JazzFest geared toward the young ones

Posted

Friday, Aug. 3 — If the idea of keeping your kid busy at JazzFest this weekend is stressing you out, relax, man. This Saturday, the Broad Art Museum has created a unique children’s workshop that will give them the tools to make their own band and give those hepcats on the main stage a run for their syncopation.

Broad Art Museum Family Day is part of the summer-long series, “Broad Without Walls: Summer in Old Town,” and the art- and music-making workshop runs from noon to 4 p.m. inside the former Chrome Cat.

Aimee Shapiro, the museum’s director of education, will lead a crafts and activities group that will teach kids to create three kinds of musical instruments from recycled materials — a guitar/banjo, a kazoo and a tambourine. Light snacks will also be provided; earplugs will not.

The event is free, no advance registration is necessary, and all ages are welcome.

Broad Without Walls events are held in Lansing’s Old Town district at the Summer Annex, 226 E. Grand River Ave. The series includes exhibitions, film screenings, family events, and performances.
