Lansing festivals set up shop

Rock N Brew is officially a go for this year

Posted

Friday, Aug. 3 — Adado Riverfront Park is fenced off today while crews work to set up stages, tents and portable restrooms: Michigan Rock N Brew Festival is officially on for this year.

This is the inaugural year for Rock N Brew, which was abruptly cancelled last year just days before it was set to start. The live music event will consist of nearly 30 bands and a long list of Michigan microbrews.

Rock N Brew will feature Toadies, known for their 1994 hit single, “Possum Kingdom,” and Helmet, who exploded in 1992 with the album “Meantime.” Also scheduled is Nashville-based blues-rock band Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown, led by Bryant, a young guitar virtuoso who has been compared to Stevie Ray Vaughn and Kenny Wayne Sheppard.

Aside from supporting youthful beer enthusiasts and rock 'n' roll fans, Ted Wilson, one of the Rock N Brew organizers, said the event is also intent on highlighting the Michigan beer industry.

“We are Michigan’s first stand-alone music festival to serve nothing but Michigan microbrew beer, which is why it’s gotten so much notoriety,” Wilson said. “It’s a big deal. We’re the great beer state and there’s no reason for us not to support all of that Michigan-made beer.”

Meanwhile, less than half a mile away in Lansing’s Old Town district, the Lansing Jazz Fest is also setting up. This is the 18th year for JazzFest. Performers this year include RJ Spangler’s Planet D Nonet Sun Ra Tribute, The Hot Club of Lansing and a long roster of other jazz cats.
