‘Something for everybody’

Thursday, Aug. 16 — The Lansing City Market will be serving up more than just fresh local produce on Saturday. Live music, children’s activities and a healthy dose of diverse local art will be on the menu for the second annual Grand Art Market.

“We have just about every medium of art that people would think of, from photography to woodwork, to metal and ironwork and hand-painted note cards,” said Heather Hymes, manager of the Lansing City Market and organizer of the event. “There is just about something for everybody.”

The Grand Art Market will combine elements from traditional art shows with the unique atmosphere of a farmer’s market, showcasing the talents of around 25 different local artists, each of whom was hand-selected through an application process. There will be a wide variety of family-friendly art from several different mediums. The art will be on display and available for sale outside the Lansing City Market in the plaza near the Grand River.

“We’re always trying to bring people into the market in a different way,” Hymes said. “They’ll come to see the art, but they’ll also get to speak with our merchants and see the food and produce.”

Guests attending the Grand Art Market will also be treated to free live music shows throughout the day. Musician Annalise Emerick will be playing her acoustic guitar from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Brad Maitland will share his take on popular pop songs from the ‘80s and ‘90s in his crowd-pleasing performance from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Aside from displaying and selling art and showcasing musical talents, the Grand Art Market offers an opportunity for creativity to the youngest visitors. From 10 a.m.-3 p.m., children will have a chance to exercise their imaginations making mosaics from tissue and construction paper at the free children’s activity center.

Hymes said that the Grand Art Market has tripled in size from last year, growing from just seven art booths to around 25, and that the goal is to have at least 500 people attend. It will be open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., and admission is free.

“It’s a great community event, a great thing for people to take advantage of and be a part of,” Hymes said. “We’re bringing art and music together, along with food. There is stuff for the whole family.”
