County commissioners say: Let’s take our time on this one

Tuesday, Aug. 28 — No vote was cast tonight for Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero’s proposed countywide park millage. The speed at which it was proposed seemed to be the main issue for the Ingham County Board of Commissioners.
The proposal is a four-year, countywide millage that would fund maintenance and operations for city-owned parks that are considered “regional assets.” Instead of a vote to send the millage before voters on Nov. 6, it was sent to a committee for further discussion by a 11-3 vote. Commissioners Vince Dragonetti and Deb Nolan were absent.
“I don’t think the ducks are lined up here,” said Commissioner Mark Grebner, who chairs one of the committees that considered the idea last week. “This is very much the cart before the horse.”
Democratic Commissioner Diane Holman called the proposal “totally half-baked.” Board Vice-Chairman Victor Celentino said the proposal needed “more discussion. … We owe that to the voters.”
Republican commissioners Steve Dougan, Don Vickers and Randy Schafer voted against moving it to committee — they didn’t want to see the proposal move forward at all.
With the proposal now in committee, it can be reworked and presented at a later time to voters. Commissioner Andy Schor said it could be considered in February, May, August or November of next year.
