The Gig Report

Musical acts coming to the capital region this weekend

Posted

Thursday, Oct. 4 — Here’s a sampling of shows happening in Lansing over the next few days. Also check out this week's edition of Turn it Down, a local music column that appears weekly in City Pulse, for other live-and-loud gigs happening across mid-Michigan.

Lou and Peter Berryman stop by the Ten Pound Fiddle concert series Friday with their brand of humorous and cheerful folk tunes. The duo began performing together back in the ‘60s and by the late ‘70s were gigging full time. To date they have released around 20 quirky albums. Folk fans may have heard the group on Prairie Home Companion, or they may have heard famous musicians like Peter, Paul, and Mary sing some of their tunes. Those who want to take in some accordion and acoustic guitars, stop by the Ten Pound Fiddle Friday. The show starts at 8 p.m. www.tenpoundfiddle.org

I’m pretty sure every ska fan has seen Mustard Plug more than once: They’ve been touring non-stop and recording non-stop since the early ‘90s. The band plays an all-ages show at Mac’s Bar Sunday. The show, which starts at 7 p.m., also includes area poppy-punks Way to Fall, Frank & Earnest, Take a Hint, and Catalina Wine Mixer. www.macsbar.com.

Also headed back to Mac’s is The Plurals. This outfit has been gigging around Lansing for quite awhile now, releasing alt-rock CDs through their own imprint, GTG Records. The band plays Mac’s on Wednesday, along with openers Honah Lee, Decades and garage-punks Racket Ghost. The 18 and over show starts at 8 p.m. The show is $10 at the door, but you can grab pre-sales for the event for $7 at Mac’s website, www.macsbar.com.

If rocking the hell out isn’t your bag, but bumping bass and electronic beats is, check out “Evolve” at The Loft on Saturday. The monthly event is hosted by DJ Jay Arthur and will also include sets from busy mix masters like DJ Sizl, DJ JD, and DJ Moskeeto. Admission is free before 10 p.m.; after it’s $5 for 21 and over and $8 for 18-20 year olds. Doors open 9 p.m.
