Election coverage 2012: Endorsements in Meridian Township

Posted

Check out the Oct. 31 issue of City Pulse for our endorsements in all Lansing-area races, as well as for statewide and local ballot proposals. See here for more on these candidates.

Tuesday, Oct. 30 — In Meridian Township, we support candidates who reflect a commitment to practical solutions, inclusiveness in a very diverse township, and greater transparency and openness.

We enthusiastically support Brett Dreyfus (D), who will bring new energy to an office that has suffered through the administration of Mary Helmbrecht. Dreyfus, along with incumbent treasurer Julie Brixie (D), have valuable experience serving the township. We support both candidates.

As for the four trustee positions up for grabs, three Democrats stand out among the eight candidates: Milton Scales, Ron Styka and John Veenstra. We appreciate Scales’ efforts to get youth more engaged in township government and Styka’s two decades of experience on the Okemos School Board would serve him well. We also like Veenstra’s board experience and his commitment to non-motorized transportation routes in that area of the county. Our fourth candidate is local restaurant owner Will White, who is running as a Libertarian. We have long respected White’s commitment to his community.
