Part of the art: Day 5

Posted

Wednesday, Nov. 7 — Today was the final day to have your portrait taken for a photographic art installation project launched before the opening of the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. However, there will be two more opportunities to become part of the project, called “The Gift: Lansing, Michigan,” on Saturday and Sunday.

More than 300 participants stopped by the former Barnes and Noble bookstore in East Lansing over the past week to have their portraits taken. The temporary studio will move into a tent adjacent to the museum on Saturday and Sunday as part of opening weekend.

The piece, by photographic artist Jochen Gerz, was commissioned the MSU Arts Department and City Pulse. It consists of a wall of framed black-and-white portraits. Gerz created similar installations in contemporary art museums in Paris and San Franciso.

When the exhibit is over, all participants will be called and given a portrait — but not their own — to take home and hang. Hence the name, “The Gift.”
