Annual fundraiser recognizes local art supporters

Posted

Tuesday, Dec. 4 — There are about 20,000 different types of glitter produced worldwide. Yep — people really love the stuff, especially around the holiday season. So in the spirit of all things bright and sparkly, the Arts Council of Greater Lansing is holding the 33rd annual Holiday Glitter fundraiser tomorrow at the University Club of Michigan State University.

Holiday Glitter serves as the group’s major annual fundraiser, which supports the various programs it runs. The event offers an opportunity for the public to hear about these programs and the organizations that the Arts Council works with. It also allows the group to recognize each member’s work. Each year the council presents the Business and Applause Awards, which recognize local businesses and individuals for their outstanding support of art and culture.

“It’s an opportunity for people to celebrate arts and culture in our region and to show our support for the work that they’ve done,” said Chad Badgero, communications & events coordinator.

This year the theme is “The Art of Puppetry,” with live entertainment including a performance of "A Ludicrous Circumstance," an original script by Lansing’s The Puppet Theatre featuring handcrafted puppets. A puppeteer from the Broadway touring production of "War Horse" will also be there to share his expertise. Additionally, puppetry created by students from REACH Studio Art Center will be on display focusing on the works they have done with marionettes.

The night is a formal affair and tickets include complimentary beverages, hors d'oeuvres and desserts.

“Glitter is a very good title for it,” Badgero said. “It’s very shimmery and glittery and it’s a nice evening as far as camaraderie. You get to see all the people that are huge supporters and investors in the arts in our community and for us to do that collectively during the holidays is really fantastic.”
