Give a little bit

Local nonprofits team up for annual charity event

Posted
The iPhone 5 and flat screen TVs are dominating many holiday wish lists this month, but sometimes all it takes is something small to really make a difference. In the spirit of the holiday season, WLNS TV-6 will host its sixth annual “Day of Giving” event Thursday throughout mid-Michigan. This daylong collection of non-perishable food, clothing and funds encourages viewers to help struggling mid-Michigan families. These donations will go to local charities that provide Lansing residents with basic needs yearlong.

Local philanthropic organizations involved include the United Way, the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross and the Greater Lansing Food Bank. All of these organizations are involved in supporting mid-Michigan households through the funding of local food banks and shelters, which will help families that may need support after losing their homes due to the poor economy.

WLNS operations manager Gene Shanahan said the station is proud to devote a large portion of its broadcast day and resources to this cause. He said it is gratifying to see the amazing results and the viewers´ generous gift giving.

The “Day of Giving” will start with WLNS’s noon newscast. One-minute breaks will air every half hour to raise viewer awareness to the cause. The event will end with a one-hour special from 7-8 p.m. to recap the day’s charitable results.

There are several different locations to donate: the WLNS studios at 2820 E. Saginaw St. in Lansing; the Allegiance Health Center at 205 N. East Street in Jackson; Capital Area Michigan Works at 331 W. First St. in Charlotte; and the Clinton County Chamber of Commerce at 1013 S. U.S. 27 in St. Johns. Viewers can also call into the phone bank at the WLNS studios to make cash donation. In previous years, about $7,500 in cash donations was raised, plus several truckloads of food and clothing.

Many people in Lansing need basics like food and clothes, and this is just one opportunity to spread a little holiday love and cheer to those that really need it. And it gives mid-Michigan residents a chance to think about what they can give instead of what they can get.
