Council committee moves on replacing city attorney

Monday, Jan. 7 — The Lansing City Council voted tonight to move forward with a replacement for outgoing City Attorney Brig Smith.
The Council, meeting as Committee of the Whole, unanimously approved a resolution naming Chief Deputy City Attorney Donald Kulhanek as interim city attorney. The Council is expected to give final approval on the nomination at its Jan. 14 meeting.
The interim period lasts two months. The Council may vote to extend it if Mayor Virg Bernero does not appoint someone else to the post in the meantime.
The administration announced in October that Smith had been nominated for the city attorney’s job in Middlebury, Conn., which he sought for family reasons.
According to the city attorney’s website, Kulhanek’s focus is on complex litigation and development. He worked closely on development deals in the Stadium District and Potter Park Zoo and is the lead attorney on developer Pat Gillespie’s Market Place and Ball Park North projects downtown.
