Board of Education elects new leadership

Posted
Thursday, Jan. 10 — The Lansing Board of Education approved a new slate of board officers at an organizational meeting tonight, electing Guillermo Lpez to replace Myra Ford as board president.

The board voted 5-4 on a slate that included Lpez as president, Nicole Armbruster as vice president, Shirley Rodgers as treasurer and Peter Spadafore as secretary. Amy Hodgin was the fifth yes-vote. The board members who voted against the slate were Charles Ford, Myra Ford, Rachel Lewis and Nino Rodriguez.

Lpez was at home sick with the flu and voted via speakerphone.

The alternative slate proposed, but never voted on, included Myra Ford as president, Rodriguez as vice president, Lpez as treasurer and Lewis as secretary. The slate mirrored the 2011-2012 leadership — apart from the secretary position, which was filled last year by Armbruster.

Armbruster led tonight’s meeting in light of Lpez’s absence.

Tonight’s meeting was held at Everett High School due to a partial ceiling collapse in the boardroom at the administration building at 519 W. Kalamazoo St.

District Superintendent Yvonne Caamal Canul said the collapse happened shortly before winter break last month. Ceiling tiles from the floor above broke off and tore a hole through the ceiling of the boardroom. She said there would need to be asbestos abatement in the room and board meetings will not take place there for at least a few months because of the cleanup and repairs.

Caamul Canul said the district will have to spend about $61,000 to remove the asbestos. There’s also extensive water and structural damage in the building, she said. The total cost for repairing the room is unknown at this point.

Upcoming board meetings will take place at the following locations:
  •     Jan. 17: Work-study session at Fairview Elementary School
  •     Jan. 24: Regular board meeting at Pleasant View Magnet School
  •     Feb. 4: Police Committee meeting at the administration building conference room
  •     Feb. 7: Regular board meeting, location to be determined
