Friday is last day for “The Gift” participants to pick up portraits

Posted

Thursday, Jan. 24 — Friday is the last day for contributors to “The Gift: Lansing, MI” to participate in the conceptual art project, which was one of the debut exhibits for the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum.

Anyone who sat for a portrait is invited back to partake in the project’s final, interactive phase: claiming a portrait, displaying it somewhere, taking a photo of it in its new home and posting it to the museum’s Flickr account.

For two months, German artist Jochen Gerz’s team of photographers took head shots of 1,182 Lansing-area residents. Those photos were then printed in black-and-white, framed and hung in one of the entrances to the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum. The idea behind the project was to then give back the portraits to the community — hence the name, “The Gift.”

Distribution goes through 6 p.m. today, and from noon to 9 p.m. on Friday.
