New art series reaches out to students

Wednesday, Feb. 20 — On March 17, the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum starts a series called Student Performance Sundays, offering an opportunity for Michigan State University student artists to showcase their work.

Through Friday, MSU students can send the museum’s manager of education a digital copy of their work or drop off a performance proposal at the museum’s reception desk. Broad Museum’s manager of education, Leyna Lightman, said that the series is an effort to engage skilled campus artists in the new building space.

“We have so many talented performers on campus and we want to get them into the museum and activate the space,” said Lightman. “Especially on Sundays, when it's so busy,”

The museum has received proposals from students wanting to showcase film, dance and music, and the possibilities for performances extend even beyond those categories. Lightman said the museum is open to all ideas and will be willing to work with a wide range of student projects.

The exact location for the performance space within the museum has not been determined, but could range from the education wing to the gallery space. And while the museum will only be selecting a few entries for the March 17 performance, Lightman said that she expects this will become either a monthly or bi-monthly event.

Students can drop off artist proposals at the reception desk of the Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum, East Circle Drive on the campus of MSU.
