Thursday, Feb. 21 — Still no plans for the weekend? City Pulse has tracked down some innovative singer-songwriters hitting area venues this week. If none of these float your boat, check out the newest edition of Turn It Down — a survey of Lansing’s musical landscape — in this week’s issue of City Pulse.

PLeThorA at Uli’s Haus of Rock
Described as “head splittingly loud” by fans, PLeThorA started out as a joke project that turned serious. Flint natives Donny Lusty (lead vocals), Matt LaRoque (lead guitar, vocals), Anthony Seitz (bass) and Carl Harahuc (drums) maintain a comedic approach to music, writing to whatever the moment feels like. The result is heavy metal songs about Lusty’s favorite dinosaur, a slug named Bartholomew and an upbeat, growling ballad about a lucky pirate. Unsurprisingly, PLeThorA was inspired by artists from a variety of genres, including Tenacious D, Flight of the Conchords, Shania Twain and Spinal Tap. Also on the bill for Friday will be metal bands The Dread Return, Undercut and Faultered Step.

Time2Play at The Unicorn Tavern
Lansing cover band Time2Play offers rock, blues, and country with an extra dose of compassion, as the group plays pro bono to raise money for local charities and nonprofit organizations. Founded by former band members from Lansing groups Sunset Creek, Hometown and the Lost Marble Band, Time2Play has covered songs across many genres, including works by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Band. Members Fred Dyer (keyboard), Dave Ludington (drums), Jack Cahill (guitar, vocals), Kathy Brandenburg (vocals), Lyle Marshall (bass, vocals) and Tom Petroni (guitar) will play at The Unicorn Tavern this Friday to benefit the MSU Students Cancer Support Network.
