March Madness, plan B

Friday, March 22 — If you can tear your eyes off your bracket for a night, MSU’s Broad Art Museum has scheduled an interesting bit of counter-programming for fans of both sports and the arts. Tonight at 7, the museum will hold a free screening of “There’s No Place Like Home,” a film about one man’s intense love of basketball.

The film documents Josh Swade, one of the film directors, as he journeys to have the winning bid at a 2010 auction for the original basketball rules created by legendary coach James Naismith.

“We wanted to do some fun things, in conjunction with March Madness, that are free for the community,” said Tammy Fortin, Broad MSU Curatorial Program Manager. She said the inspirational movie is a perfect break from the ongoing basketball tournament. The film is part of ESPN’s “30 for 30” series, which documents the evolution of sports through the eyes of filmmakers. Fortin said that anyone wanting to enjoy a night out can appreciate the story.

“Swade’s quest is a labor of love,” said Fortin. “It’s a real story about one man’s obsession. Basketball is just the vehicle that drives the broader theme.”
