Thursday, April 18 — Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero has named Captain Mike Yankowski as interim police chief for the city of Lansing.

Yankowski follows Chief Teresa Szymanski, whose last day on the job is Saturday. She announced her retirement last week.

“Today is about transition for our community,” Bernero said in the lobby of Sexton High School this morning. “This chief will bring his own stamp and his own style to the police department.”

Yankowski, 40, has been with the Lansing Police Department for 18 years. He has served as an officer, a canine handler and a field training officer. He has risen from the rank of sergeant to lieutenant and then, in March 2010, to captain.

“This means a lot to me and my family,” Yankowski said. “I promise an open, responsive police department.”

Szymanski described Yankowski as “loyal, dedicated and hardworking.” Her advice to him: “Be bold and have fun. This is the greatest job in the world.”
