Learn more about the week’s upcoming shows below and also in this week’s edition of Turn It Down.

The Pro Letarians at Mac’s Bar

Meeting by chance on the same residence floor at Indiana University, hip-hop duo The Pro Letarians balance full-time college life with a burgeoning music career that is now taking them touring across the Midwest. Producer JO and Emcee Jupiter Jim have released three mixtapes to date, garnering online attention and drawing comparisons as daunting as Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco. Jupiter Jim has been rapping since he was ten years old, starting at a church group with his friends, while JO first discovered production software in high school. Opening for The Pro Letarians are hip-hop acts P.H.I.L.T.H.Y. and D Fraze.

Thursday, Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. All Ages. $10-$12, 7 p.m.

Ulan Bator at Mac’s Bar

Ulan Bator is celebrating two decades of experimental avant-rock with the release of their twelfth full-length album, “En France/En Transe,” to be released May 27. The French band was formed in 1993 by Amaury Cambuzat (vocals, guitar), Olivier Manchion (bass) and Frank Lantignac (drums). Though the original lineup has changed, Ulan Bator has maintained a steady presence in the experimental scene and has nurtured a long relationship with German experimental rock band Faust, including some dual sets lasting over three hours. Hailed by some as the best rock and roll to come out of France since Magma, Ulan Bator has come a long way since their days of recording in a converted chalk-mine in Paris. Opening for Ulan Bator are Michigan prog and rock bands Ozenza, Jack Pine Snag and Hordes.

Saturday, Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. 18 . $7, 9 p.m.

Red Stone Souls at The Loft

Red Stone Souls is a mix of blues, psychedelic and vintage rock and roll created to break away from the new generation of rock. The Detroit-based foursome — Ian Kirwan, Beau Felix, Kevin Bernard and Travis Erikson — came together from earlier bands such as The Nines and Dangerous Pursuit. Described as “your best friend’s older brother’s band,” Red Stone Souls has become known for dirty guitar riffs, shrieking, rumbling vocals and a commitment to defy Top 40 conventions. Red Stone Souls has released a handful of digital singles to date and expects to release a debut LP sometime in 2013. Also performing Thursday will be hard rock trio Like a Storm and Michigan rock band The Green Light Effect.

Thursday, May 16, The Loft, 414 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. All Ages. $10-$12, 7 p.m.
