Kinetic connection

Thursday, July 18 — On Friday, the Broad Art Museum unveils its newest exhibit: “Less Still,” by Lisa Walcott, a Grand Rapids-based installation artist and kinetic sculptor. This is the first exhibition in the MSU Federal Credit Union Artist Studio Series at the Broad.

Spokesperson Jake Pechtel said the exhibit’s name is fitting.

“(These) pieces are installations that will be in motion,” Pechtel said. “The images only really give a visual concept.”

Walcott received her Masters of Fine Arts in sculpture from West Bloomfield’s Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2010 and has exhibited her work nationally.

According to a release, her work explores “the cycles of deterioration and growth through various subtle gestural objects.”

Her pieces add a touch of surreality to everyday items, including “Vice Versa,” an unassuming red ball on a string, and “Swarm,” which resembles a mobile made of houseflies.

The opening event starts at 7 p.m. Museum founding director Michael Rush will introduce the exhibit, and Walcott will be on-hand to talk about her work. There will also be a live performance from the Whiskey Pickers, a Lansing bluegrass band, as well as refreshments in the museum’s education wing.
