BWL: Beware of phone scammers

Lansing Board of Water and Light reports fraudulent telephone calls asking for payments, threatening to turn off service

Posted

Thursday, Aug. 8 — Lansing’s publicly owned utility is warning of “telephone calls from scam imposters” who have threatened to turn off customers’ service if they don’t provide credit card information over the phone or make wire money payments.

A Lansing Board of Water and Light press release issued today said two “concerned commercial customers” have received the calls from a Detroit-area phone number — (313) 427-0362. “The same number has appeared in scam alerts issued by the Marquette Board of Light and Power in the Upper Peninsula.”

BWL customers are never asked by BWL customer service representatives for credit card information over the phone or in person, or to make payments through a wire service like Western Union or Money Gram,” the BWL said.

Customers can report suspicious activity to BWL customer service at 702-6006 or by calling local police.
