Free legal consultation event scheduled for Oct. 10 in Old Town

Thursday, Oct. 3 — For low-income individuals, legal assistance is hard to come by. So in honor of Pro Bono Month, more than 30 attorneys are setting up shop in Old Town next week to offer up to 30 minutes of free legal consultation to those in need.

The “Ask-A-Lawyer” event, hosted by the Ingham County Bar Association and Legal Services of South Central Michigan, is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 10 at the law offices of Clark Hill PLC, 212 E. Grand River Ave. in Old Town.

Charles Lawler, an attorney at Clark Hill and member of the county Bar Association’s board, said the attorneys will come from a variety of law backgrounds.

“The need for pro bono assistance is greater now than ever,” due to the number of Michigan residents who qualify for free legal aid based on their income and increased foreclosure rates, according to a press release for the Oct. 10 event.

The State Bar Association of Michigan has designated October as “Pro Bono Month.” A pro-bono week in October is also recognized by the American Bar Association.
