Forward pass

Local humanitarian group ePIFanyNow holds Sunday event

Posted
Friday, Oct. 4 —The mid-Michigan-based group ePIFanyNow will gather in Lansing on Sunday to spread a little happiness in the community. The PIF in the group’s name stands for “pass it forward,” a play on the ethos behind the film, “Pay it Forward,” where an individual makes the world a better place by performing random acts of kindness for strangers.

“The idea is to come together and create continuous momentum,” ePIFanyNow founder Bob Hoffman said. “This isn't a fundraiser or religious or political in nature. It's just like-minded people helping others for the sake of doing something nice.”

The ePIFanyNow Party goes from 1-5 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 6, and will be held at the U-Club, 3435 Forest Road in Lansing. It’s free and open to the public.

When party-goers arrive, they will be given 100 ideas on ways on positive things to do in the community that afternoon. Everyone disperses, then re-convenes a few hours later to share stories of what they did.

More than 200 people attended the ePIFanyNow party in February. The group was featured on the national CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley in 2012.

“Our team helped paint the interior of a home and do landscaping for a woman who suffers from a neurological disorder,” said Kris Tennant, Webberville High School’s girls basketball coach. “It was a great experience for the kids. We are on board to do it again.

Hoffman, the public relations director at MSU’s Wharton Center, started ePIFanyNow in 2009.

“(My) dream is to spread ePIFanyNow across the globe and eventually develop a curriculum for schools around human interaction and impacting society through acts of kindness,” he said. “All goods, services, acts of kindness and assistance are volunteer-driven and donated in the name of passing kindness forward.”
