Monday, Dec. 9 — On Dev. 24, 1913 in Calumet, Mich. — 100 years ago this month — a mining company was hosting a Christmas party while miners on strike with their families picketed outside the building. Disaster struck when someone shouted “fire” inside the building and 73 people were trampled to death.

Tonight at 6:30, the Capital Area District Library will host a screening of the new documentary “Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913.” The film focuses on the 1913 Copper Strike, including the aftermath of the deadly stamped, which came to be known as the Italian Hall Tragedy.

After the viewing, Steve Lehto, author of “Death’s Door: The Truth Behind Michigan’s Largest Mass Murder” will lead a discussion of the documentary and his book. Capital Area District Library, 401 S. Capitol Ave., Lansing. For more information visit cadl.org or call (517) 367-6363.
