Building Red Cedar

Friday, Dec. 20 — Clark Construction Co., the Lansing-based firm that built the Michigan State Police headquarters, will lead the construction on the former Red Cedar Golf Course project.

Developer Joel Ferguson said during a taping of “City Pulse Newsmakers” Thursday that Clark will be the lead construction company behind the $120 million to $140 million transformation of the shuttered golf course on Lansing’s east side. He expects the project to break ground in the spring.

The show airs at 9 a.m. Sunday on MY18-TV.

Clark’s work is on display throughout the area, which also includes renovations at Michigan State University’s Union Building and Shaw, Bailey and Rather halls.

Ferguson and Ohio-based developer Frank Kass are also working with a trusted architecture firm in Hobbs and Black. Ferguson has worked with them before on the police headquarters and the Anderson House Office Building downtown. The Ann Arbor-based company, which has an office in downtown Lansing, also designed the former Majority restaurant at 225 W. Allegan St.

“They really are first class,” Ferguson said of Hobbs and Black. “We’ve got a very good, excellent team.”

Ferguson said he’s also using the same team for redeveloping the state fairgrounds property in Detroit.

As for the look of the Red Cedar project, he said: “I want this to be a game changer. This is probably my last time around the track on a major development and I want it here in the city and I want my name on it and I want to be proud when I drive by there.”
