New Year’s events

Where to ring in 2014 in Lansing and East Lansing

Posted

Monday, Dec. 30 — All dressed up, but not sure where to go? Don’t drop the ball before midnight. Here’s a listing of New Year’s Eve celebrations around the Lansing area.

‘Fiddle’ NYE Contra Dance
It may be a new year, but if you’re looking for an old-time party, the Ten Pound Fiddle’s nostalgic New Year’s Eve Contra Dance party might be the ticket. Hosting the event is Michael Hamilton (caller) and Fiddlefire performs live music. For those unfamiliar with contra and square dancing, organizers help teach moves to newcomers. There is a “caller” who teaches the dance steps first; once the live band starts playing, the caller calls out the moves as they happen with the music. No partner needed: The night is set up to switch partners for each dance – comfortable shoes are suggested. A potluck is at 6:30 p.m., followed by a quick contra-dance workshop at 7:30. Dance runs 8 p.m. to midnight.

Tuesday, Dec. 31 @ Central United Methodist Church, 215 N Capitol Ave, Lansing, tenpoundfiddle.org, 8 p.m.

NYE with Terrance Parker
Neon Tuesday, an ongoing electronic-music night at Mac’s Bar, hosts the venue’s New Year’s Eve celebration, which runs until 4 a.m.Headlining the night of DJs is Detroit legend Terrance Parker, who will spin a two-hour set. Openers include Ruckus, Xaos and the Neon DJ Crew. The NYE show will also have a chocolate fountain, Hors d'oeuvre, a Champagne toast and more. Parker helped revolutionize the Motor City underground electronic music scene, along with icons Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Carl Craig and Jeff Mills. Parker’s contributions were honored in the Detroit Historical Museum’s History of Techno International Exhibit. Parker is also a producer and remixer, having done tracks for Akon, Beyonce, Kanye West and Christina Aguilera.
Tuesday, Dec. 31 @ Mac’s Bar, 2700 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. 21 , $10, 9 p.m.

Catalina Wine Mixer at The Loft

Local pop punks Catalina Wine Mixer headline The Loft, openers are From The Ends of the Earth, St. Elmo’s Fire, Don’t Pull the Plug and Rebecca Brunner. After growing up on groups like Coheed and Cambria and Blink 182, the members of Catalina Wine Mixer formed its own band in 2007. Since then the Holt-based band has played energetic pop shows from Lansing to Chicago, opening for bands like Mustard Plug and Laura Stevenson. The band, which includes lead vocalist/guitarist John Bradford, bassist Jonathan Andrews, rhythm guitarist David Robb and drummer Mike Bologna, was originally a cover band – playing songs by Green Day and other bands they admired, but after a handful of shows they began penning originals.
