Beating cancer

Lansing Relay for Life chapter hosts kick-off event for June fundraiser

Posted

Friday, Feb. 14 — The American Cancer Society will host its kickoff event for the Relay for Life of Lansing on Wednesday at Midtown Beer Co. in downtown Lansing. The relay will take place June 27-28 at the Cooley Law School Stadium, 505 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing. Kristen Adams, Relay for Life spokeswoman, said that in the past the group has hosted its event at smaller venues, and this move to the stadium represents a big move forward for Relay for Life.

“We are hoping to grow the event by leaps and bounds,” she said.

Adams completed her first relay in memory of her grandfather, who died when she was 3 years old. “It’s a safe space to grieve and mourn, but also to celebrate the loved ones lost to cancer,” she said.

The kickoff event will feature a presentation by a cancer survivor. Adams said it sounds overwhelming to most, but they always get amazing reviews after someone’s first relay.

“Once you do it, you’ll be hooked and want to come back year after year,” she said.
