Sound off on ballpark plan

Thursday, March 13 — City and economic development officials formally proposed a $22 million public/private renovation of Cooley Law School Stadium Wednesday — but is it the right project for the city? We want to hear from you.

Social media has been buzzing about it for the past 24 hours, and not all of it is as optimistic as officials are. Are stadium upgrades beyond critical infrastructure necessary? Does the Bernero administration continue to focus its attention solely on downtown, neglecting the rest of the city? These are a few of the criticisms directed at the plan.

In this week’s cover story, though, supporters of the project say it brings a one-of-a-kind experience to Minor League Baseball — no other stadium in the country has residential living within the park, they say.

Moreover, Mayor Virg Bernero and Lansing Lugnuts owner Tom Dickson say that while they could have done the bare minimum in infrastructure improvements, this project is about pushing the boundaries of what could be done. Ultimately, the private development bringing over 100 new residents downtown will mean a net gain for the city.
