Study up

By Drew Winter

Like it or not, you’re going to have to crack a textbook at some point this semester, even if it’s just to make good enough grades to keep the party going. Dorms are full of distractions, so here’s a look at where to go when you need to get away from the Xbox or your roommate’s ongoing break-up saga and actually get some work done.

GrandRiver Coffee

This upscale café has just about anything you could want in a study spot. It’s usually quiet, offers a large variety of teas and coffees, many tables and a patio with optional umbrellas to combat rain and shine. Although there are several cushy leather couches and chairs, the majority of the seats are wooden. But if you don’t mind stiff chairs, this café is absolutely excellent.

Christian Science Reading Room

Despite the religious overtones throughout this immaculate and comfortable room, patrons will find they can enjoy a peaceful and undisturbed study experience. Although the room lacks Wi-Fi, there is a computer with full Internet access, and the chairs are extremely comfortable, boasting a swiveling table and cup holder.

Mama Bear’s Cafe

Although space is definitely not its strong point, this cafe at the heart of Lansing’s Old Town is cozy and tranquil. With several brews to keep you going and a delicious, diverse spread of meals and pastries, you can keep studying while you recharge your batteries.

1224 Turner St. Lansing. Hours: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuesday – Sunday; closed Monday. WiFi available.

Woody’s Oasis

This restaurant/bar is a clever spot to stake out if you’re planning a long day of hitting the books. The place is pretty empty when the sun is shining (and there’s a patio if you prefer to bask in it). You can also eat and take the edge off with some alcohol.

211 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing. 11 a.m. – midnight Sunday – Tuesday; 11 a.m. – 2 a.m. Wednesday – Friday; noon – 2 a.m. Saturday. WiFi available.

24-hour Biggby Coffee

There are several Lansing-area Biggby Coffee locations to choose from, but this one never closes, making it ideal for all-night cram sessions. And what better combination than an all-night cafe packed to the brim with caffeinated beverages?

270 W. Grand River Ave., East Lansing. WiFi available.

Great Lakes Chocolate & Coffee Co.

For the studious sweet tooth, this Michigan Avenue café offers all you need for a sugar high. In addition to the addictive offerings, customers can also enjoy soft drinks, bagels, and pastries.

Decker’s Coffee Co.

Decker’s offers an extensive menu of smoothies, sandwiches and breakfast items served all day. Its outdoor patio offers umbrellas to shield from oppressive heat and rain, but they don’t do anything to block out the noise from the busy street still overrun with construction.

MSU Botanical Gardens

MSU students in particular can enjoy unequaled tranquility nesting in one of the many gardens located on the east side of Farm Lane and just north of Wilson Road. Although wind, temperature and insects will no doubt complicate the experience, there is not a more serene place to enjoy solitude with a book.
