Lansing Civic Players stages 'Merchant of Venice' at Potter Park Zoo
Tuesday, July 19 — If you walk through Potter Park Zoo and hear iambic pentameter, don’t be surprised: It’s just the Lansing Civic Players’ production of “The Merchant of Venice.”
In past years, the company has performed Shakespeare on the Grand River. “We thought it might be nice to try something different,” said director Mike Stewart. “So we decided to pick the zoo.”
Stewart knows the potential problems associated with outdoor theater, such as unpredictable weather and noise. Last year, the LCP troupe performed near a fire station and had to stop and wait for an ambulance to pass by.
Luckily, in Potter Park they shouldn’t face this problem. “They’ve got a nice little spot for us,” Stewart said. “The biggest noise will probably be a few lions there.”
The cast of “Merchant” includes Tod Humphrey as Shylock, Kris Vitols as Antonio, Anna Hatcher as Portia, Sarah Hauck as Narissa, Daryl Thompson as Gratiano and Joseph Mull as Bassanio.
Performances start at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and at 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through July 31. Admission is free (with your zoo ticket), but donations are appreciated.
