A young cast tells the story of the storyteller 'Scheherazade'
Friday, July 22 — Grab your flying carpet: “Scheherazade: Legend of the Arabian Nights” is the latest production of All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre. The show, directed by Rick Dethlefsen, brings to life the story of Scheherazade, the legendary narrator of the Arabian Nights folk tales. She uses her wit and talent to overcome the wrath of a powerful king who grew vengeful after he suffered a broken heart.
As with all productions by All-of-us Express, “Scheherazade” features a cast composed entirely of youth actors, ranging from 6 to 17 years old. In fact, almost all aspects of this play have been handled by the children, including set design, make-up, lighting, sound and props.
“We want to provide quality theater experience for youth participants, both on and behind the scenes,” said Miranda Hartmann, artistic director of the play. She explained that adults only serve as supervisors to the nearly 50 young people involved in the production.
“It’s definitely a family experience,” Hartmann said. “We encourage kids and parents or grandparents to come together, experience and enjoy the show.”
Performances will take place Fridays and Saturdays through July 30 in the Hannah Community Center. Tickets are $5 for children 17 and under, and $7 for adults. They may be purchased at the door or ahead of time by visiting the Hannah Community Center, calling (517) 333-2580, or visiting www.cityofeastlansing.com/onlineregistration.
