Tuesday, Aug. 9 — Attention all photographers and Shiawassee County enthusiasts: The deadline to enter the first-ever "Around Shiawassee County" photography competition is quickly approaching. All contest entries must be submitted to the Shiawassee Arts Center by this weekend.
The guidelines are simple: All photographs must be taken in Shiawassee County, and the size of each piece, including the frame, may not exceed 72 inches in total dimension. Each entry into this non-juried event must also have a hanging wire attached to the back, as well as a small description, including the photographer’s name and when and where the photograph was taken. After that, the sky is the limit.
“We hope to get both amateur and professional photographers involved, and people of all ages,” said Piper Brewer, the executive director of the art center. “There are some wonderful scenes within Shiawassee County that are a photographer’s dream — wonderful buildings and architecture, 1940s homes, trains, country scenes with barns, country schoolhouses. It’s really a beautiful county.”
There will be eight categories for potential awards, including 35mm black and white, 35mm color, digital (regular and manipulated) and youth awards for elementary, middle and high school students. There will also be a special “green” award for a photograph based on nature, as well as a people’s choice award.
All prizes will be in cash, with amounts to be determined at a later date. There will be an entry fee of $5 per photo, with a maximum of three entries per person.
Photographs will be on display from Aug. 14 until Sept. 18, and winners will be announced on Sept. 9 at a special reception at the Arts Center, from 6-8 p.m. For more information or application forms, visit www.shiawasseearts.org, or call the Arts Center at (989) 723-8354. The Shiawassee Arts Center is located at 206 Curwood Castle Dr. in Owosso.
