Japanese folk-pop hits The Record Lounge in REO Town

Posted

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 30 — A string of folk and indie musicians hailing from Lansing, Chicago and Nagoya, Japan, will be playing at The Record Lounge in the REO Town Marketplace this Saturday.

Scuttlebuggs, a Chicago duo composed of Kevin Golden and Claire Kander, liken their collaborative project to groups like the Everly Brothers, The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers and Low.

The folk duo is on a United States tour with Tabibito, a Japanese folk and pop act helmed by songwriter HanimalüTabibito’s music is defined by Hanimalü’s lush voice and ukulele, moved along with rhythm guitarist Naoto.

Golden and Kander met Hanimalü in Nagoya during Scuttlebuggs’ 2018 Japanese tour, which featured 18 performances.

“We got along great and loved each others music, so we decided to plan a tour together in the States,” Kander said. “Here we are almost a year after we met, sharing 19 shows around the Midwest and up to the East Coast.”

Lansing-based singer-songwriter Pete Jon will take the stage in between the bookending touring acts. His music is an interesting adaptation of lo-fi folk music, utilizing warm, reverb-drenched synthesizers and deep, drum-machine-produced rhythm tracks.
