What's up in Lansing — Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17-18

Good day on this mid-October weekend.

Halloween will be here before we know it. You can begin the festivities now at Potter Park Zoo's Boo at the Zoo family event. Activities include crafts, a straw maze, hayrides and of course, zoo animals. Costumed staff members also give tours of the zoo.

Guests who find themselves brave enough are also highly encouraged to take a walk through the infamous Boo Tunnel.

If you can't make it this weekend, Boo at the Zoo will also be held next weekend. The event is covered by general admission to Potter Park Zoo and requires strip tickets for activities.

For more family fun, the MSU Museum promises fossil-filled fun for the whole family with its Saturday celebration of National Fossil Day. Families are invited to join the free festivities, which include a junior paleontologist hunt, a dinosaur puzzle station, face painting, guided tours of the museum’s Evolution Hall and much more.

Curious curators can even bring samples of their rock and bone collections to be identified by an expert paleontologist.

Organized by the National Parks Service and the American Geosciences Institute, National Fossil Day is designed to promote public awareness and stewardship of fossils and foster a greater appreciation for their scientific and educational value.

The weekend is a great time for music shows. Singer-songwriter and teacher Elden Kelly, known internationally for his improvisational skills, appears at Central United Methodist Church Sunday for a solo concert performance.

A guitar virtuoso, he often adds color to his songs with fretless guitars or Middle Eastern instruments.

Kelly teaches guitar at Jackson College and Elderly Instruments and also maintains a private studio in East Lansing.

Another musical option for Sunday is MSU’s resident brass quintet, Beaumont Brass, presented by the Lansing Symphony Orchestra. The quintet is in its second chamber music concert of the 2015-2016 season.

The quintet, comprised of four members of the College of Music faculty and one doctoral student, will present a program that includes “Morning Music” by composer David Sampson. The subject of “Morning Music” is the murder of Sampson’s brother at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan and American Nazis in 1979.
