Coming ‘round the bend

Lansing residents have a chance to watch “the most exciting two minutes in sports” on the big screen Saturday as City Pulse and Midtown Brewing Co. team up to host the second annual City Pulse Kentucky Derby Party, featuring specialty drinks, prizes and complimentary food.

Marc Wolbert, general manager at Midtown Brewing Co., is excited to bring the party back to downtown Lansing.

“Last year’s event was great,” he said. “We had an incredible number of people come out.”

Attendees can watch the race on Midtown Brewing Co.’s two big screens and new sound system. Last year’s party filled the bar to capacity. Reserved seating — including a free specialty beverage and complimentary mint julep glass — is available this year for $25 per person, with a minimum table of four.

Midtown Brewing Co. is creating some special bourbon-based drinks for the occasion, as well as a gin-based drink for those who are looking for something different.

“It’s so light and refreshing,” Wolbert said. “It’s going to be a huge hit.”

And, of course, there will be mint juleps.

“You can’t have a Kentucky Derby party without mint juleps,” Wolbert said.

A complimentary buffet table will feature fresh salads and Kentucky-inspired fare, including burgoo, a spicy stew that is a staple of bluegrass state gatherings.

“It’s like a Kentucky chili,” Wolbert said. Attendees will also have a chance to take home some Kentucky Derby-themed gifts. Every paid admission includes entry into a drawing for a silver-plated engraved mint julep cup. Those who correctly pick the horses who win, place and show will be entered into a drawing for bottles of Kentucky bourbon. Special prizes are also awarded for best dressed male and best dressed female.

“I’m really looking forward to a great event,” Wolbert said.
