Strange Matter in Stars Hollow

Coffee shop celebrates ‘Gilmore Girls’ with one-day transformation

FRIDAY, Sept. 30 — Sixteen years ago, on Oct. 5, 2000, “Gilmore Girls” hit the airwaves for the first time. Wednesday, Lansing’s Strange Matter Coffee Co. is celebrating the “Gilmoreversary” by rebranding its shop as Luke’s Diner for the day.

The diner is a popular hangout in Stars Hollow, Conn., the fictional town where the series takes place. Strange Matter is one of 250 coffee shops in the U.S. teaming up with Netflix for the one-day transformation, which includes Luke’s coffee sleeves — featuring a quote and custom Snapchat filter — as well as Luke’s hats and aprons for the Strange Matter baristas.

“When the company that handles Netflix’s promotions contacted me about this, I said ‘Oh yeah, we have to do this,’” explained Cara Nader, Strange Matter owner and chief coffee engineer. “As a fan of ‘Gilmore Girls,’ I was super excited.”

As part of the promotion, Strange Matter is handing out 250 free cups of coffee, featuring a blend from Bay City roaster Populace Coffee, from 7 a.m. to noon (or while supplies last). Some of the Luke’s-themed coffee sleeves will also include a free month of Netflix.

“Gilmore Girls” ran on the WB network until 2006, when the network was shut down. It jumped to the CW network for its final season, ending in May 2007. Netflix has reunited the cast for a set of four 90-minute episodes, which are slated for a Nov. 25 release.

Nader said her baristas are looking forward to the “Gilmore”-themed festivities.

“I took a poll of my employees,” she said. “Almost all of them are fans. We only had three employees that weren’t fans.”
