What's Up in Lansing: Solar Eclipse Viewing Party

Posted

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past month, it’s likely that you’re aware of the solar eclipse happening today. But if you didn’t know, it’ll be the first time in decades that the contiguous U.S. will have a chance to view an eclipse.

Although in some areas of the country the eclipse will be total, in Lansing, only the majority of the moon will cover the sun. The only visible part of the sun will be the top of the sun’s corona, or its outermost layer of gasses.

To safely view the eclipse, you’ll need certified glasses that have an ISO or international standard for safe solar viewing label, known as the ISO 12312-2 or 12312-2:2015.

If you haven’t picked up your pair of glasses yet, feel free to attend a Solar Eclipse Party sponsored by Capital Area District Libraries, where you’ll receive a pair, as well as company to view the rare phenomenon.
