Interested in learning about a new form of dance? Perhaps seeing the Habibi Dancers at Allen Farmer’s Market might encourage you to join.

The Habibi Dancers website describes the organization as one “existing to promote understanding and appreciation of Middle Eastern music and dance to preserve and communicate this appreciation.”

The organization itself is more than a dozen women strong and was indirectly founded in the 1970s by Wilma Papsidero, who taught belly dancing at Lansing Community College. Eventually, group members who took Papsidero’s courses branched of, and formed the Habibi dancers — “habibi” being a term of endearment in Arabic.

Today, the group offers closes in Lansing, East Lansing and Potterville.
