The 2003 modern-classic about a washed out rocker posing as a substitute teacher at a prep school gets revamped for a touring Broadway production with big stage guitar riffs and catchy tunes.
There's no backing tracks. Each actor knows how to play their rock instrument live.
“You’ve found the quadruple threat. They sing, act, dance and play their own instruments,” Wharton Center public relations manager Bob Hoffman said.
Debuting on Broadway in 2015, “School of Rock” was the brainchild of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and playwright Julian Fellowes. Webber acquired the rights to use “School of Rock” as a musical in 2013.
The show at Wharton is part of the U.S. tour, which kicked off in 2017.
“Anytime you have something where people love the movie they think, ‘I've watched the movie, so I’ve already seen Broadway show.’ But when you see a Broadway show, things come to life in a different way,” Hoffman said.
The movie was always a popular draw on television after it came out, Hoffman said.
“I remembered watching it three or four times. Every time it came on, you would be enthralled with it.”
Fans of the film can expect all of the original music from the film, plus 14 more tracks written by Webber.
“No matter what age you are, you are going to love it. I work with a lot of college students, they've seen the movie and they are excited. Sometimes it feels like a cult film.”
The production runs at Wharton until Sept. 23.
