Drawing marathon at Broad
10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum
547 E. Circle Dr., East Lansing
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 26 — Broad Museum is abounding with opportunities to sketch, illustrate and draw.
Michigan State University’s department of art, art history, and design’s Drawing Marathon features costumed models, wheel of drawing topics spinning wheel, collaborative drawing boards and self guided tours for all ages and experience levels.
“It is a drawing extravaganza,” Broad Museum director of education Michelle Word said. “It is so fun to see people have an idea and take it to completion.”
Events like this are great for people who claim they can’t draw, she said.
“That desire to make a mark is such a human impulse, so we try to create things that are accessible for all kinds of people. They can sit down and find out they too can do this.”
Supplies will be provided, but attendees are encouraged to bring their own as well.
“We don't have heavy instruction and want to emphasize that anyone can make art and draw. The spaces are for conversation and to get people to a starting place. We try to create opportunities for people not to get stuck in the moment.”
Some people are in it for the long haul, drawing for up to nine hours, but a lot of people attend just to watch, Word added.
There will be three collaborative art spaces for those interested in group work.
“Anytime you have people coming together and making art together, they can be social and learn a lot from each other,” Word said. “That is an important lesson and important for us to realize we all have different perspectives, because we all come from different places.”
Last year’s event saw 200 high school students, as well as a good mix of college students and East Lansing citizens.
“We can have seniors making art alongside college students, alongside a family. I love seeing people contribute in their own way.”
