Happening Now in Lansing: Walter French building coated in murals

Posted

Murals of pop culture icons and musicians from REO Town’s Art Attack community art project went up on the Walter French building at 1900 S. Cedar St. this morning.

“The best thing about doing projects like this in the community is that it creates ownership in the project. Children, adults and elderly people all came together to make this,” Art Attack artist Eric R. Schantz said.

The Capital Area Housing Partnership, CAHP, acquired the building in December 2017 as a donation from the the Eyde family. It plans to utilize the building with affordable housing and commercial space.

“We are excited about the potential of the Walter French building, and transforming it into a wonderful new place to live in Lansing,” CAHP executive director Mikki Droste said. “At this stage in the process we are working to solicit community input on the use and design of the property.”

Home Depot provided a volunteer crew to secure the murals to the building.

“New development always follows art. Anywhere you look globally, when the artists go in and art goes up, businesses follow right behind it.” Schantz said.
