FRIDAY, SEPT. 28 — Stalwart Michigan folk band Mustard’s Retreat is visiting Lansing to celebrate its new album. The original 1975 Ann Arbor lineup continues its folk music prowess with new release “Make Your Own Luck.”

This will be the group’s 14th album and features songs co-written by original member Libby Glover, who rejoined the band in 2015. Mustard’s Retreat throughout the years mostly consisted of fellow members David Tamulevich and Michael Hough as a duo.

“She moved back in 2015 and we decided to start singing together. It was just like no time has passed,” Tamulevich said.

Folk music is about being defiantly hopeful, Tamulevich said.

“For me, it just resonated as what folk music is all about. It is defiantly hopeful in the face of what's generally going on.”

“Make Your Own Luck” includes a cover of the Don Lange song, “Take the Children and Run,” in protest of the Flint Water Crisis. The song was originally written about the Three Mile Island disaster in Pennsylvania.

“When Flint happened, we wanted to address it and keep the issue alive as we traveled the country. I just found myself adapting it. I called Don and said, ‘Can we modify the song?’ And he told me, ‘Absolutely.’”

The group’s success stems from its honesty, Tamulevich said.

“We never put out anything we are not. We are not slick. We are grounded in the moment — not selling, but sharing, an experience with the audience.”

Mustard’s Retreat has played 6,000 shows, but each one feels different, Tamulevich said. “It is about the people who are there and they complete the show.”

The Ten Pound Fiddle is more than an East Lansing organization, he added.

“It has a national reputation as an organization that is spoken of in glowing terms all over the country. So many people want to play it.”

Mustard’s Retreat will take requests of their repertoire.

“That is the ultimate compliment for a songwriter. We always try to honor them,” Tamulevich said.
