Allen Farmers Market

1611 E. Kalamazoo St., Lansing, MI

WEDNESDAY, DEC. 19 Lansing area crafters and artists come to the Allen Farmers Market for the last winter market of the year with merry holiday gifts.

“We are fortunate to have a core group of folks who are extremely loyal and shop every week, which is how we stay alive during the winter,” said market manager Julia Kramer. “It is a challenge to constantly remind people that our market is open year round, and we even feature fresh produce year round.”

Shopping local for goods is not just about getting better quality gifts, Kramer said.

“As with food products, buying your gifts and art locally keeps your dollars circulating in our community and supports small producers, as opposed to giving your money to large companies that move it out of the community.”

The Allen Farmers Market also provides access to fresh produce to the less fortunate, she added.

“We accept EBT and offer Double Up Food Bucks, as well as credit cards and cash to increase our accessibility to those who have trouble affording fresh produce.”

There will be a live performance by folk musician Rick Hansel between 5 and 6 p.m. Vendors include Denise Paquette, Connie Swix, Peace Works, Soulful Earth Herbals and Mulford Arts.

Throughout 2019 and beyond, the market plans to develop its building into a multi-use housing and commercial property, Kramer said.

“The market will continue through these changes, but we will adapt as we must to the changing landscape, both on a neighborhood and food industry level.”
