Max Lockwood Album Release

THURSDAY, Feb. 7 — The Grand Rapids native acclaimed for sounding like Tom Petty mixed with a Beat Generation poet is releasing his self-titled album at The Robin Theatre.
The nine-track album was recorded at Grand Haven’s Third Coast Recording studio with Lockwood putting in long hours recording guitar, bass, keyboards and vocal sections.
“It has been very much a solo and more so introspective endeavor,” Lockwood said. “Working that intensively on something alone allows a deeper experience of making a record.”
A folk rock backbone runs through the album’s core with occasional pop and alternative accoutrements. Subtle wispy backing vocals also give the work an expansive quality.
A single off the album, “Tried Love,” has a music video set in the Michigan wilderness with lakeside sand dunes, bonfires and woodlands.
“Very often I’m inspired by spending time in the natural world and using natural imagery as a lens to write with and understand what it means to be human,” Lockwood said.
For the live performance, Lockwood will employ a six piece band to bring his tracks to life.
Opening will be special guest singer songwriter May Erlewine, who just came off a tour in the United Kingdom.
Erlewine and Lockwood have collaborated together on several projects across the years.
“I love working with May. She is one of my all time favorite songwriters,” Lockwood said. “I've been playing for five or so years with her, and it has always been an inspiring artistic endeavor.”
For “Max Lockwood,” Erlewine collaborated on the songwriting and contributed background vocals.
The connection you build between the audience and your original music is what makes the long hours on the road and in the studio worth it, Lockwood added.
“Anytime you can make a piece of art meaningful and change a person in some way is special. I’ve had albums and works of art change me for the better. It is amazing music can do that.”
